Each year, colleges and universities throughout the country recognize September as National Campus Safety Awareness Month.
While App State prioritizes your safety and well-being year-round, the fall semester offers a fresh opportunity to review campus safety resources. As Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police, I encourage every member of the campus community to familiarize themselves with this information and share it with family, friends and colleagues.
Remember: In an emergency, call 911. You can also text 911.
Four actions to take today
- Review personal safety and communication plans with your family.
- Add App State Police to your phone contacts: 828-262-8000. Our team is available 24/7/365. Please call anytime you need help on campus.
- Download the Appalachian Safety mobile app.
- Register for campus emergency notifications using the AppState-ALERT notification system. Families can also register for text-only AppState-ALERTs.
Campus Safety Resources
The Health, Wellness and Safety Fest is tomorrow, Tuesday, Aug. 25, from 1 to 4 p.m., on Sanford Mall. This annual event, organized by Wellness and Prevention Services, is an opportunity to engage with campus areas and community partners that provide safety, health and wellness resources and services.

Mountaineer Safe Walk
Boone campus: Safe Walk is a free safety escort service available to students during the fall and spring semesters from 9:45 p.m. to 2:45 a.m., seven days a week, excluding university holidays and breaks.
Hickory campus: Students can request a safety escort to their vehicles in the evenings by calling 828-262-8000.
Emergency Preparedness
Preparing for emergencies, even the most basic, will help you respond more quickly and effectively should the need arise. Learn how to prepare for and respond to campus emergencies, such as an active aggressor incident, a medical emergency or severe weather.
Hosting an on-campus event? Review the Events Planning page on the Emergency Preparedness site for campus requirements. You can even book emergency medical services personnel for your event via App State’s Mountaineer Medics.
Active Shooter or Armed Intruder Resources
It is important to prepare for an armed intruder situation just as you prepare for other types of emergencies. Remember these three key tactics: Run. Hide. Fight.
