App State Operations:
Spring 2025 beginning-of-semester update
App State sends periodic operational updates that include information about key university operations, health and safety protocols and other important campus information for students and employees.

Spring 2025 semester classes begin Monday, Jan. 13
Campus Updates
- Review the 2024-25 Academic Calendar for key, upcoming academic dates.
- Visit the Campus Services Express Desk, with Boone and Hickory campus locations, for questions related to AppCards, Campus Dining, Campus Services, Student Employment, Parking and the Campus Store.
- Belk Library and Information Commons, Nicholas Erneston Music Library and Hickory Library and Information Commons are open with limited hours — regular schedules begin Monday, Jan. 13.
- Campus Dining facilities are open with limited hours and locations — regular schedules begin Monday, Jan. 13.
- University Recreation locations on the Boone and Hickory campuses are open with limited hours and locations — regular schedules begin Monday, Jan. 13.
- Student Health Service offers in-person and telehealth appointments for illness and injury, pharmacy services and vaccine resources for students. Call 828-262-3100 to schedule an appointment — last appointments of the day are taken at 4 p.m. View clinic hours.
- Counseling services:
- For Students — Counseling and Psychological Services offers emergency services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In case of a mental health emergency, visit the Counseling Center weekdays, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. After hours, call and select the option to speak with the counselor on call.
Regular hours and appointments and Let’s Talk drop in consultations will resume Monday, Jan. 13. Call 828-262-3180 to make an appointment. Initial consultations are available weekdays, 8:30–11 a.m. and 1–4 p.m.
- For Employees — Counseling for Faculty and Staff (CFS) provides counseling, consultation, training, and referrals for employees and their immediate families. CFS is open weekdays, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Visit the website to make and appointment and/or for more information.
- IT Support Services assists students and employees with App State and personal devices:
- Call the ITS Help Desk at 828-262-6266, weekdays, 8 a.m.–5 p.m.
- Submit a support ticket (login required) and indicate your location (Boone or Hickory) for routing.
- Visit the Technology Support Center:
- Boone campus — Anne Belk Hall, room 140, weekdays, 8 a.m.–7 p.m.
- Hickory campus — Hickory Library and Information Commons, Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m.–7 p.m., and Friday, 7:30 a.m.–5 p.m.
- University Events Scheduling and Communications manages on-campus event/meeting space requests for faculty, staff and students. Visit the website to review policies and access the scheduling system (login required) to request space.
- The interactive campus map, which includes the Boone and Hickory campuses, is regularly updated.
- Construction updates are available at the university’s App State’s Future website.
Additional Resources for Students
- The Office of the Dean of Students provides individualized support and case management for all students, including support for parents and families, off-campus student resources and student veteran services.
- The Student Success team offers learning resources for all students, including academic advising and support, career readiness programming and the University Writing Center.
- Wellness and Prevention Services serves all students through the promotion of healthy behaviors, risk behavior modification services and advocacy for campus-wide health. Appointments are available weekdays, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Call 828-262-3148 for more information.
- All students are automatically enrolled in App State’s textbook rental program. Visit the Campus Store’s Student Textbook Resources page to review your textbooks and course materials and/or order physical textbooks and course materials.
Campus Safety
App State Police Department
- In an emergency, call 911 for the fastest, most reliable means of getting emergency assistance.
- The App State Police Department non-emergency phone number is 828-262-8000. If you have not already done so, add App State Police to your mobile phone contacts.
- App State Police also provide non-emergency, courtesy medical transports for students year-round, seven days a week on the Boone campus, from 8 a.m.–3 a.m., excluding holidays and scheduled academic breaks.
Mountaineer Safe Walk
Mountaineer Safe Walk is a free and secure safety escort service for Boone campus students who may feel uncomfortable walking alone after dark — view the Safe Walk map layer for transport service locations.
- Boone campus services begin Monday, Jan. 13.
- If you are at the Hickory campus and would like an escort to your vehicle in the parking lot after dark, please ask at the Student Information Desk.
Emergency Preparedness
- AppState-ALERT is the university’s 24/7 emergency messaging system that uses texts, voice messaging, the siren warning system, desktop alerts, email and web alerts to provide App State students and employees with timely information in the event of a campus emergency.
- Voice and text alerts are opt-in. Register for AppState-ALERT text and/or voice messaging.
- The RAVE Guardian mobile safety app is available to students and employees free of charge and includes access to the AppCares, App State Police and App State Emergency Preparedness websites. Learn more and download the RAVE Guardian mobile safety app.
- Review App State’s Emergency Preparedness page for tips on how you can prepare for and respond to specific types of emergencies.
Cybersecurity
- Fraudulent email scams impersonating faculty or known contacts tend to increase at the beginning of an academic semester. Immediately report suspicious emails to [email protected].
- Find tips and tricks to recognize scams, information security attacks and ways to protect your personal information on the Office of Information Security website. Reach out if you have questions or need assistance — 828-262-6946 or [email protected].
Winter Weather Update Reminders
When adverse weather affects the university’s regular operations, decisions about universitywide changes to class or work schedules will be communicated via:
- The university homepage and appstatealert.com website
- Emails to student and employee App State email accounts
- The university’s telephone snow line: 828-262-SNOW (7669)
- Posts to App State’s Facebook and X pages
Additionally, the university notifies campus and local media outlets.
Adverse weather may not change operations at all campus locations. Messaging will specify only the campus areas that are affected. Learn more about how the university communicates concerning winter weather closures and delays.
All public safety operations and essential campus operations continue regardless of weather delays or cancellations. These include but are not limited to App State Police, University Housing, Campus Dining and Student Health Service.
