App State Operations: Fall 2024 campus update
App State sends periodic operational updates that include information about key university operations, health and safety resources and other important campus information for students and employees.
Keep reading for helpful resources and the latest updates for the Boone and Hickory campuses.
Classes for the fall 2024 semester begin Monday, Aug. 19.
Overall campus updates
- Visit the Welcome to App website for a schedule of events open to students in August and September.
- The Campus Services Express Desk, with locations on both the Boone and Hickory campuses, offers a convenient hub for all your Campus Services needs and the first stop for questions related to AppCards, Campus Dining, Campus Services, Student Employment, Parking and the Campus Store. - Belk Library and Information Commons and Hickory Library and Information Commons are open now with limited hours — regular schedule begins Monday, Aug. 19.
- Campus Dining is open now with limited hours and locations — regular schedule begins Monday, Aug. 19.
- Mountaineer Safe Walk services will resume for the academic year on Monday, Aug. 19.
- The App State Police Department provides non-emergency, courtesy medical transports for students year-round, seven days a week, from 8 a.m. – 3 a.m., excluding holidays and scheduled academic breaks.
- Student Health Service offers appointments for illness and injury, pharmacy services and vaccine resources for students. Call 828-262-3100 to schedule an appointment — last appointments of the day are taken at 4 p.m. View clinic hours.
- Counseling and Psychological Services offers services to Boone and Hickory students.

- Wellness and Prevention Services serves all App State students through the promotion of healthy behaviors, risk behavior modification services, health awareness and active lifestyles while taking an all-inclusive approach to wellness.
- University Recreation is open with limited hours — regular schedule begins Monday, Aug. 19.
- Visit Parking and Transportation for information about campus parking, game day parking, and bus and shuttle services.
Updates specific to the Hickory Campus
- Beginning Monday, Aug. 19, the Hickory campus will be open Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. – 9 p.m., and Friday, 7 a.m – 5 p.m.
- Dining options will include a market for snacks and sandwiches, as well as grab-and-go vending and a portable coffee station.
- The Hickory campus Engage portal has a schedule of upcoming events for students that will take place on the Hickory campus.
- Register for Hickory campus parking at the Campus Services Express Desk located in the first-floor lobby. Boone campus permits are valid on the Hickory campus — if you have a Boone campus permit, you do not need to register for an additional Hickory campus permit.
- The Hickory Library and Information Commons regular schedule begins Monday, Aug. 19.
- Recreation facilities on the Hickory campus will open Monday, Aug. 19, and will operate Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m, and Friday, 7 a.m – 5 p.m.

Emergency Preparedness
- Review App State’s Emergency Preparedness page for tips on how you can prepare for and respond to specific types of emergencies.
- AppState-ALERT is the university’s 24/7 emergency messaging system that uses texts, voice messaging, the siren warning system in Boone, desktop alerts, email and web alerts.
- This system is designed to provide App State students and employees in Boone and Hickory with timely information in the event of a campus emergency.
- Voice and text alerts are opt in. Register for AppState-ALERT text and/or voice messaging.

Cybersecurity
- Fraudulent email scams impersonating faculty or known contacts tend to increase at the beginning of an academic semester.
- Appalachian State University faculty and staff will never ask you to pay them directly for any service related to the university. If you are ever asked to do this or to provide other information, do not respond to the email or click on any links.
- Immediately report suspicious emails to [email protected].
