App State Operations: Spring 2024 end-of-semester update
App State sends periodic operational updates that include information about key university operations, health and safety resources and other important campus information for students and employees.
Keep reading for helpful resources and the latest campus operations updates for students and employees as the university celebrates spring graduates and summer terms begin.
Preparing for summer
Congratulations graduates and welcome summer students!
- Commencement: App State celebrated its newest graduates at Spring 2024 Commencement on Friday, May 10, and Saturday, May 11. Watch recaps of the ceremonies.
- New student orientation: Orientation sessions for new first-year and transfer students admitted to App State for summer and fall 2024 begin Friday, May 31. Students beginning classes in Summer Session 1 must attend the Friday, May 31, 2024 orientation session. Read more about orientation, and download session schedules here.
- Summer Sessions: App State holds two, five-week summer sessions.
Summer Session 1 classes run from Tuesday, May 28–Friday, June 28.
Summer Session 2 classes run from Wednesday, July 3–Tuesday, August 6.

Students, please take these actions before leaving campus for the summer
- Return rented physical textbooks by Tuesday, May 14 — drop books off at the Campus Store or ship them using a trackable method.
- Return or renew your library books and materials. Please note that some items must be returned/renewed in person.
- Forward your on-campus mail, if applicable — complete the Mail Forwarding Form (log-in required).
Additional campus operations updates
- Most Campus Dining facilities are closed through Friday, May 24. Summer hours vary by location.
- Campus Dining will also offer RSVP meal options for pick up Friday, May 24–Monday, May 27 at Park Place in Trivette Hall.
- Review the University Libraries’ hours of operation.
- University Recreation is operating with adjusted hours through Monday, May 27 — summer schedule begins Tuesday, May 28.
- Student Health Service is operating a modified schedule in Boone through Friday, May 24 — regular hours resume Tuesday, May 28, following the Memorial Day holiday.
- Student Health Service at Hickory closed on Tuesday, May 7. Regular services will resume in fall 2024.
- Telehealth appointment options are available. Call 828-262-3100 to make an appointment.
- Any student with health-related questions and concerns after normal clinic hours, may call 828-262-3100 and press "1" to be connected with an after-hours nurse.
- Mountaineer Safe Walk ended on Wednesday, May 8 and does not operate in summer. Normal operations will resume in fall 2024.
- Non-emergency, courtesy medical transports for students continue year-round, 7 days a week from 8 a.m. to 3 a.m., excluding holidays and scheduled academic breaks.
General campus information
- Updates from Chancellor Norris are published to the Chancellor’s newsletter website.
- Construction updates are available at the university’s App State’s Future website.
- The university map, which includes the Boone and Hickory campuses, is regularly updated. Review the map here.
- Visit the Campus Services Express Desk for assistance with AppCards, meal plans, parking and more.
Resources for Students
- The Office of the Dean of Students provides individualized support and case management for all students, including support for parents and families, off-campus student resources and student veteran services.
- The Student Success team offers learning resources for all students, including academic advising and support, career readiness programming and the University Writing Center.
- Wellness and Prevention Services serves all students through the promotion of healthy behaviors, risk behavior modification services and advocacy for campus-wide health.
- Appointments in Boone are available Monday–Friday, 8 a.m–5 p.m excluding observed holidays. Call 828-262-3148 for more information.
- Drop-in virtual appointments in Hickory are available Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays through Thursday, July 18. Call 828-262-3148 for more information.
- Counseling and Psychological Services offers regular and after-hours emergency support for urgent mental health concerns for all students.
- Call 828-262-3180 and select the option to speak with the counselor on call.

Campus safety resources
App State Police Department
- In an emergency, call 911 or App State Police at 828-262-8000 for the fastest, most reliable means of getting emergency assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout the year.
- The App State Police non-emergency phone number is 828-262-2150.
If you have not already done so, add App State Police to your mobile phone contacts.
Emergency Preparedness
- App State’s Environmental Health, Safety and Emergency Management team works in coordination with other departments across campus to build a safe and prepared campus. Review App State’s Emergency Preparedness page for tips on how you can prepare for and respond to specific types of emergencies.
- AppState-ALERT is the university’s 24/7 emergency messaging system that uses texts, voice messaging, the siren warning system in Boone, desktop alerts, email and web alerts.
- This system is designed to provide App State students and employees in Boone and Hickory with timely information in the event of a campus emergency.
- Voice and text alerts are opt-in. Register for AppState-ALERT text and/or voice messaging.
- The RAVE Guardian mobile safety app is available to students and employees free of charge.
- Access the AppCares, App State Police and App State Emergency Preparedness websites from the app.
