First Home Football Weekend of 2013

Friday, September 6, 2013

I know that you are as excited as I am about the first home football game of the season. I love the display of Black and Gold all weekend long as we show our Appalachian Pride. I look forward to seeing the flags flying, seeing the various tailgates across campus along with visiting with many new and old friends.

Regardless of what your weekend brings, remember we are a community that cares, so have a plan to look out for others. Know what you will do if you see someone who needs help Friday night, during the day on Saturday and Saturday night. We all play a role in the Appalachian Experience, so if you go out… have a plan and be aware, if you see something… say something. It is up to each of us to do our part in looking out for one another every day, including this weekend. You don't have to have all the answers - information is available right here on this website, or text APPSTATE to 50555 to download helpful numbers directly to your phone.

Two students I know of have already made a difference this semester. Each came across a situation that didn't feel right, and each made a call and “said something.” Each of these students helped another Mountaineer by simply making a phone call asking for help. I am thankful for both of their efforts as they truly exemplify what we mean by “It’s Up To Me.”

Enjoy this weekend visiting with friends (new and old), going to the football game, or just simply being outside exploring campus or the High Country. Be safe and have fun!
